Question 1. The reason for Jacking in bridge works?

Answer: The other name for bridge jacking is structural lifting operations. As the name indicates, the structural components of the bridge are incrementally lifted and each component is individually replaced or repaired.

This kind of lifting operation is performed and necessary to ensure the structural authenticity of the bridge that repairs are completed.

In the lifting operation, hydraulic systems are used for stressing cables, replacing bearings and beams, and replacing trusses.

Question 2. what is coping?

Answer: Coping is made on the top of the walls to protect the wall in the rainy season. Coping is laying of concrete on the top of the wall to avoid the entry of rainwater in structure or wall.

Question 3. what is pile foundation?

Answer: Pile foundations are known as deep foundations.  A pile is a thin column made of wood, concrete or steel.  They are used in case of soft/silty/clayey type of soils. A pile is either move into the soil or formed around by excavating a hole and then filling it with concrete.  Pile foundations are the foundations which transfer the load to greater depths; where there is strong strata/load reaching that point is minimal.

Question 4. Define the terms Formwork, Shuttering, Centering and Staging.

Formwork – Formwork is a temporary structure or arrangement done to support the fresh concrete to attain its strength and structure (shape). In formwork fresh concretes are poured to cast the members of the structure at the site. It may be horizontal support or vertical support.

Shuttering:  Shuttering is the formwork which supports the vertical surface

Centering: Centering is the formwork which supports the horizontal surface such as slab bottom, beam.

Staging – Materials such as pipes, jacks, wooden ballies, props which support both shuttering & centering are known as Staging.

Question 5. What is the difference between highway pavement and local road?

Answer: Before difference, we will see what is road pavement?

The road pavement is the actual surface on which the vehicles will travel. Its purpose is to provide friction for the vehicles and to transfer normal stresses to the underlying soils.

The Highway pavements are constructed based on the IRC recommendations. It has a correct pavement width, shift, superelevation etc. it is capable to withstand high vehicle load, provide limited friction on the vehicle, and have the flexibility to withstand load without any damage. But the local roads are having less importance so it doesn’t satisfy all requirements.

Question 6. Define construction joint and expansion joint?

Answer : Construction joint: A JOINT WHICH IS PROVIDED TO CONTINUE THE CONCRETING, WHEN IT CAN NOT BE COMPLETED in the given time is known as construction joint.

Expansion joint: The Concrete expands and contracts due to the temperature.

As the name indicates, the expansion joint is a joint by which the structure will not get affected due to the expansion of the concrete.

Question 7. what are the basic parameters considered in designing a pavement?

Answer: the basic parameters considered in designing a pavement are

  • Traffic intensity
  • CBR value of the soil

Question 8. what are the unit weights of different materials?

Answer: Materials Unit Weight

Question 9. What is poisson’s ratio of steel?

Answer: Poisson’s Ratio is the ratio of Lateral Strain to Longitudinal Strain.

Poisson’s Ratio= Lateral Strain/ Longitudinal Strain.
Its value for steel is 0.3

Question 10. Which grade of concrete is the strongest M20, M25, M30, M35 or M40?
